North Carolina Backyard Wedding
I met Jesslyn and Mikey in college, and I was so excited when Jesslyn asked me about shooting their backyard wedding in North Carolina. I was moving to another country (see my work in Spain here!), but as a destination wedding photographer, traveling for weddings is what I love to do the most. Their wedding sounded like a dream, with lots of flowers and homey touches in the place she grew up. Little did we know that Hurricane Florence would make an appearance on the planned wedding day. As the week of the wedding approached, Jesslyn and Mikey had to make some tough decisions. They decided they were getting married no matter what and moved up the wedding in hopes of beating the storm.
If you hadn’t been watching the news, you never would’ve known Hurricane Florence was on its way to North Carolina. Their intimate backyard wedding couldn’t have been more perfect, and there wasn’t a drop of rain that day. Jesslyn and Mikey got to say their vows surrounded by nature and their friends and family. I really admire their determination to make the most of the situation at hand, and even a hurricane couldn’t take away their joy. They got to start their adventure of a life together a little early, and that’s always worth celebrating.
How to handle a wedding in a storm
It can be extremely stressful to manage wedding planning with a storm, or in this case Hurricane Florence, looming over your big day. First, it’s important to have a back-up plan. For example, if your wedding is outside like this North Carolina backyard wedding, make sure you have an indoor venue, a tent, or lots of umbrellas ready on standby. Check weather updates, road closures, and transportation that your guests and vendors might use to get to your wedding. Be flexible and willing to make changes where needed. Lastly, take a deep breath and remember that, ultimately, your goal is to marry your best friend. Things don’t always go as planned, but if you don’t let the obstacles get the best of you, your day will be incredible!
